Beekeeper for a day - what will you experience?

Discover the fascinating world of diligent bees and the sweet reward of their work – honey. The "Beekeeper for a day" experience program will allow you to peek into the life of bees and try out the work of a beekeeper yourself. The apiary is located approximately 6.7 km behind the village of Bodíky towards Gabčíkovo, right in the heart of the Danube Floodplains Protected Landscape Area, just 35 km from Bratislava. Parking is available about 150 meters from the apiary; further access is prohibited due to nature protection.

Theoretical Part: Unveiling the Secrets of Bee Life

We will begin with a theoretical session, where we will introduce you to basic beekeeping tools and their use. You will learn everything about the life of bees, their hierarchy, development, and the fascinating process of how a bee comes into being – from an egg to an adult individual. We will explain why bees are important for our ecosystem and why it is essential to protect them.

Additionally, we will discuss:

• Bee Communication – how they communicate through dance and pheromones,
• Bee Products – not just honey, but also pollen, propolis, royal jelly, and beeswax,
• Challenges of Modern Beekeeping – why bees are endangered and how we can help them.

Practical Part: A Beekeeper's Life Firsthand

After acquiring basic theoretical knowledge, we will move on to the practical part. We will put on complete beekeeping suits and protective gear to ensure safety and allow us to fully focus on interacting with the bees. Right at the hives, we will demonstrate everything from the theoretical part in practice.

You will have a unique opportunity to:

• Open a hive – you will look inside and see the queen bee, workers, and drones,
• Identify different stages of bee development – eggs, larvae, and pupae,
• Understand the arrangement of combs – honey, pollen, brood, and bee cells,
• Learn how to handle bees correctly – with respect and minimal disturbance,
• And we'll bring a new bee family to life – together we will create it so that it can raise its own queen and start a full life.

After successfully completing both the theoretical and practical parts, we will take a well-deserved break. Right in the heart of nature, near the bees, we'll have a picnic together. The greatest reward will be tasting fresh honey straight from the plastic, which you will enjoy in its purest and most natural form.

The whole experience will be enhanced by the charm and peace of the Dunajské Luhy Protected Landscape Area, which is located on the largest river island not only in Slovakia, but also in all of Central Europe. Here you will be able to fully breathe in the fresh air and admire the beauty of the surrounding nature - without the hustle and bustle of the industrial environment and away from intensive agricultural activity, yet only a few kilometers from the capital.
